Mindset
There is a beautiful quote by Henry Thoreau that sums up the essential importance of mindset to the experience of life.
“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.”
This is the observer effect of quantum mechanics in action, which states that if we change how we perceive something, the thing itself changes.
It is equally true that how we perceive something or some situation is determined by our prevailing state of mind which frames our lens of perception. For example, a mind preconditioned by fear all likely perceive threat where another mind preconditioned by an abiding faith in the goodness of things will see opportunities for growth and expansion.
This is why Einstein said, “Everyone should ask themselves, ‘Is this a friendly universe?’” Why? Because your answer determines the experience of your life.
This speaks to the quantum mechanical principle of contextuality, where we experience life through our perceptions and understanding of the relatedness or interrelationship between things. For example, we can see all things as separate and distinct from one another, a space where it is “every man for himself”, or we can choose to see the interconnectedness of all things as one action precipitates another. Is the glass half full or half empty? How we see the world as defined by the thoughts and feelings that shape our mind and inform our lens of perception. And the thing with thoughts is that the vast majority of the 70 to 100,000 thoughts you have each day are a product of what we call your default mode network, which is your network of subconscious programming that governs your autonomic and automatic responses to all stimulus.
This is why Karl Jung said, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will rule your life and you will call it fate.”
