Gratitude: the Antidote to Lack

It’s often said that hope is not a strategy, but hope is all you have until faith steps in. Faith is what transforms the impossible into “I am possible.” This article explores the power of gratitude to boost faith in the form of self-belief or esteem, making gratitude the antidote to lack.

If you didn’t believe you could do something, you wouldn’t bother getting off the couch. But the challenge with faith is that it can be misplaced. Faith is the manifestation of belief, and we choose what we believe in.

So, where is your faith placed? What are you believing that shapes the way you see the world?

The Illusion of Lack: A Question of Belief

For many, the current narrative is one of hardship: Things are hard. Money is tight. The road ahead is treacherous. These beliefs shape our perception of the world. What are your personal truths? Do you feel like you’re down on your luck?

  • Feeling uncertain, anxious, and a little frightened about the future?
  • Time-poor, under pressure, and struggling to make ends meet?
  • Feeling exhausted, like time is compressing and you’re running on empty?
  • Blaming others—politicians, bankers, or the system?

It’s important to recognize that you are not alone in these feelings. Behind every irrational fear lies one of two core human fears:

  1. The fear of not being enough – Unworthiness
  2. The fear of not having enough – Fear of lack

As the Greek Stoic philosopher, Epictetus, once said, “Beware what thoughts you hold in your mind most frequently, for life is invariably colored by such impressions.”

When we hold onto thoughts of lack, we inevitably create experiences of lack in our lives. It’s always a case of mind over matter.

Faith and Abundance: A Shift in Perception

Misplaced faith occurs when we fail to recognize the inherent abundance of the universe. We also fail to recognize our own inherent worthiness within it. It takes courage to dispel fear—and courage is forged in the fire of faith.

This “fire in the belly” drives us to take action and step out into the arena of life. Faith in oneself is authentic self-belief. Self-belief is grounded in self-acceptance, and self-acceptance is self-love.

A deep, abiding love for oneself leads to a sense of esteem, which creates stature in the human form. When we feel worthy and whole, we are liberated from fear, guilt, and shame.

So, how do we develop esteem and orient ourselves toward prosperity?

The Power of Gratitude

The most effective pathway to prosperity begins with gratitude. Only a prosperous mind can create a reality based on prosperity.

Gratitude brings into focus everything we value in life. When we appreciate what brings us joy, safety, and peace, those things tend to multiply. The more we see the good in our lives—what we have, what we do, and what others do for us—the more the goodness of life comes into focus. Like attracts like.

When we begin to see the good in the world, we also start to see the goodness within ourselves. Gratitude enhances our perception, and as it grows, it creates a cycle of reciprocity: gratitude invites generosity, and generosity invites more gratitude.

The Neuroscience of Gratitude

The act of saying “thank you” releases Oxytocin, also known as the “love hormone.” This feel-good chemical gives our bodies a refreshing energy boost, creating a resonant feeling of love within us. Gratitude becomes a bio-hack—displacing the need for dopamine hits from social media likes or cortisol from stress.

On a physiological level, gratitude relaxes the body—lowering the shoulders, softening the jaw, unclenching the fists, and opening the palms. It creates space to breathe, trust, and let go, knowing that the universe has our back.

Gratitude as a Practice of Prosperity

Gratitude is the key to prosperity. It fuels faith, strengthens self-esteem, and dispels the illusion of lack. It is the antidote to scarcity.

In everything, give thanks:

  • Receive a bill? Thank you for the electricity that warms my home.
  • Thank you for the fresh water that quenches my thirst.
  • Thank you for the sun that lights the sky and guides my way.
  • Thank you for the rain that nourishes the soil.
  • Thank you for the flat tire that caused me to pause and reflect.
  • Thank you for words of kindness, and thank you for challenges that help me grow.
  • Thank you for the opportunity to share, and thank you for the opportunity to be.

What a rare and precious gift you are. Thank you.

Gratitude is the original prayer and the ultimate blessing. It is manifestation in action. Gratitude fuels esteem, esteem fuels faith, and faith gives us the courage to turn “impossible” into “I am possible.”

The Price Metrics of Gratitude

  • Total Cost: Nothing
  • Total Reward: Abundance, through an abundant mindset.

What’s stopping you from upping your daily dose of gratitude? Thank you. Gracias. Merci.
