“Coincidence is God’s way of Remaining Anonymous”

The quote above has been attributed to none other than Albert Einstein, widely considered one of the most brilliant minds of all time. He also said, “The more I understand science, the more I believe in God.”

Einstein’s brilliance extended beyond what he came to know and understand, for he was incredibly lucid in his understanding of how the mind best functions and how we acquire intelligence.

A coincidence occurs in the moments where we were just thinking about something and then it suddenly appears before us; when two minds appear to have had the same or similar thought at the same time in a “Snap” moment; or, when we come into contact with someone who appears to have had the same idea in the same previous moment e.g. turning up to the same costume party wearing the same costume as a friend at which point we are likely to exclaim, “Ha! Great minds think alike.”

The point being that coincidences, first and foremost, are conjured in the mind. And the conjuring of thought is an innately creative process.

Creativity is defined as the process by which we derive an original idea that has value…to us. By definition, creativity is a product of the mind. Logically, it then follows that the Creator is a particular state of mind that facilitates the conjuring of an original idea.

God, by any other name, is Creator. It can be thought of as an alchemical state of mind where we create something out of nothing.

This echoes Descartes famous opining, “I think therefore I am.” And carries with it the very essence that, in all things, it is always a case of mind over matter.

The mind operates cognitively and harbours the capacity for a great many cognitive behaviors, some of which serve us well and some which don’t depending on the context in which they are applied.

The cognitive habit of mind that allows us to generate an original idea is called Intuition, which may be most simply defined as the means by which we receive intelligence from a source beyond ourselves. At the level of conscious awareness, it is the means by which nothing becomes something, just like Einstein’s theory of relativity which simply came to him in a dream.

“From whence it came, I do not know.”

Intuition is among the most poorly understood and, consequently, substantially underused cognitive tools that we possess. Einstein described intuition as a sacred gift. Specifically, he said,

“Intuition is a sacred gift and reason is it’s loyal servant. We have created a society that has forgotten the gift and honours the servant.”

In forgetting the gift, we have lost sight of its power to positively shape and inform the expression and experience of our lives.

Original thought is the product of an original thinker. It is in our capacity for original thought that we discover authentic agency in our lives, and the capacity to create the lives that we intend for ourselves.

Carl Jung once said, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will rule your life and you will call it fate.”

Intuition is the cognitive tool of the master mind. It is the mechanism by which the unconscious is made conscious as an idea pops into our field of imagination, as something previously invisible is made visible to the mind’s eye.

We often refer to intuition as a “gut instinct” or the “heart’s wisdom” and this captures the essential truth that intuition is manifested through resonant feeling, something we might simply call pre-thought.

So, for Descartes, a fuller explanation may be, “I feel therefore I think therefore I am”.

Intuition is not only a sacred gift in the form of an original idea that has value to us but it is also the source of that sacred gift. Our minds are constructed of all the original ideas that we adopt as our own in the form of beliefs, and our relationship to those beliefs, which shape and inform how we perceive the experience of life.

When we learn how to make best use of the cognitive power of intuition, we develop the capacity to turn all coincidences into genuinely favourable experiences and develop true agency over our lives. Harnessing the power of intuition is essential to the development of creative potential. It is also where we tap into our own unique brand of genius, just as Albert did. For him, it was figuring out how the universe worked, what might it be for you?
